Unlucky Burger
Nandre Burger has already produced two absolute jaffas to Kohli. On another night, he might have had him twice. The first draws him into a push and zips past the outside edge; the second sneaks past the inside edge and swings viciously, evading even a full-length dive from Jurel to run away for four byes.
In between, Kohli unfurls that trademark whip over square leg, and there’s a wayward burst of five wides for good measure.
RCB are purring: 32 for 1 after just two overs

Salt v Archer
Sandeep Sharma and Jofra Archer celebrate in the middle, Rajasthan Royals vs Mumbai Indians, IPL, Guwahati, April 7, 2026
Archer and Sandeep celebrate•BCCI
It takes a vicious, rip-roaring bouncer to undo RCB’s powerplay enforcer. The ball flies off Phil Salt’s glove before he can even sway out of the way, looping gently to Dhruv Jurel, who completes a simple catch behind the stumps. There’s precious little Salt could’ve done - sometimes you just have to doff your hat and acknowledge a superb delivery.
It's an eventful first over. Apart from Salt's wicket, Archer nearly had Kohli off the last ball as he nicked a lifter past a diving Jurel. Just prior to that, Padikkal picked off two boundaries, one off a genuine outside edge past the slips and another delightful cut over backward point.

Looking ahead to the big clash

Rajasthan Royals opt to bowl v Royal Challengers Bengaluru
Big drops of rain returned just as the toss neared its completion, with the ground staff swiftly bringing the covers back on. For the record, Riyan Parag won the toss as Rajasthan Royals elected to bowl first against RCB in a battle of two unchanged sides in Guwahati's final game of IPL 2026.
Parag cited rain and moisture on what should've otherwise been a dry surface as one of the reasons behind his decision. Royals left out Tushar Deshpande for fellow-seamer Brijesh Sharma in their bowl-first XI. with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi set to come in as the Impact Player.]
Rajat Patidar announced the return of Josh Hazlewood for RCB, following a swift recovery and a fitness clearance from Cricket Australia. This means Jacob Duffy, who performed exceedingly well in the two games prior to this, has to make way.
"We've been clinical before the start of the tournament. We want to play smart cricket. Hope we keep assessing and adapting," Parag said. "All three games are in the past, we have to perform. If we don't, we'll lose two points."
This is RCB's first away game, following two excellent home wins at the Chinnaswamy to kick off the season. Last year, they won each of their seven 'away' fixtures en route to the final, where they beat Punjab Kings to be crowned champions for the first time.
Rajasthan Royals (Playing XI): Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Riyan Parag (capt), Shimron Hetmyer, Donovan Ferreira, Ravindra Jadeja, Jofra Archer, Nandre Burger, Sandeep Sharma, Ravi Bishnoi, Brijesh Sharma
Impact subs: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Ravi Singh, Shubham Dubey, Tushar Deshpande
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (Playing XI): Virat Kohli, Philip Salt, Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar (capt), Jitesh Sharma (wk), Tim David, Romario Shepherd, Krunal Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Abhinandan Singh, Josh Hazlewood

The making of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

If you missed it earlier: I travelled to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s hometown this month to trace the roots of his remarkable rise. What I found were some incredible stories from those who’ve known him since he was 6 or 7. There’s also his mentor, Zubin Bharucha, breaking down the nuances of his technique and what sets it apart. It’s a long read, but I’d love to know what stands out to you about the 15-year-old.

The rain is back
And so are the covers. We're looking at a delay. For now, only the square has been covered, but the pitter-patter is rather steady. Just a matter of time before they bring on additional covers. Looks like we're in for a frustrating evening. Forecasts change and how. Last evening, the forecast for today was clear from early afternoon. And yet here we are, bracing for delays.

Pitch and conditions
Sandeep Sharma and Jofra Archer celebrate in the middle, Rajasthan Royals vs Mumbai Indians, IPL, Guwahati, April 7, 2026
Sandeep Sharma and Jofra Archer will be key for Rajasthan Royals•BCCI
True pitch, even bounce, and conducive for strokeplay. It's the same surface on which RR walloped 150 in their 11-over shootout against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Tuesday. The mantra will pretty much be the same for the batters: plant the foot forward, flay the ball fearlessly. The weather forecast seems a lot better too, from around start time.

Raining in Guwahati
The news from the centre isn't great: it's raining heavily in Guwahati. Earlier this week, the Rajasthan Royals vs Mumbai Indians game was reduced to 11 overs a side. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Team news?
RR are likely to remain unchanged; there are no injury concerns in their camp.
Rajasthan Royals (likely XII): 1 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 2 Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, 3 Dhruv Jurel (wk), 4 Riyan Parag (capt), 5 Shimron Hetmyer, 6 Donovan Ferreira, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Jofra Archer, 9 Sandeep Sharma, 10 Nandre Burger, 11 Tushar Deshpande, 12 Ravi Bishnoi
Hazlewood is still working his way back to full fitness and remains an unlikely starter. The only other decision for RCB is whether to persist with Abhinandan Singh, which seems likely. If they opt for a change, however, Rasikh Dar and Mangesh Yadav are two viable options.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (likely XII): 1 Virat Kohli, 2 Phil Salt, 3 Devdutt Padikkal, 4 Rajat Patidar (capt), 5 Tim David, 6 Jitesh Sharma (wk), 7 Romario Shepherd, 8 Krunal Pandya, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Jacob Duffy, 11 Abhinandan Singh, 12 Suyash Sharma

Battle of two unbeaten teams
6:15
Kohli-Salt vs Jaiswal-Sooryavanshi, who will win the battle?
In the days leading up to IPL 2026, the conversation around Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) revolved around valuations, ownership, and their much-talked-about changes of owner. Within weeks, though, the focus has shifted to on-field performances and the excitement these two sides have caused. Their all-win record seems almost incidental.
If Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has brought the box-office appeal, Devdutt Padikkal has matched it with the purity of his strokeplay and a high-tempo presence at No. 3. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel's authority at the top has been mirrored by Rajat Patidar's remarkable six-hitting, while Nandre Burger's pace and late swing have found an echo in Jacob Duffy's relentless hard lengths. And this is without even mentioning Virat Kohli - an ever-present force at the top, whose evolving approach has now carried into a third straight season.
